The Choir is proud to be a continuing part of the history of this Collegiate Church. Its long musical tradition has evolved over time with the original all male choristers being joined by females in the 1970s. The choir now numbers 25, around a third being children. Ages range from 7 to 90 plus.
The main purpose of our Choir is of course to lead the congregation in its singing and it does so principally in the Sunday morning sung Communion and also at Evensong. The sopranos and trebles (children) sing the tune with the other adults (altos, tenors and basses) adding harmony. We sing anthems as well as hymns.
other Special services
These include Choral Evensong for the Friends of the Church, Harvest Songs of Praise, Advent Carol Service and Carols by Candlelight. We also sing for Weddings when we are able to sing the couple’s choice of anthems during the signing of the registers.
other choir involvements
We take part in the annual Devon Royal School of Church Music Festival in Exeter Cathedral, our Church Christmas Tree Festival and Christmas Market; and the Friends of the Church Carol Evening at Knightstone Manor. We also hold our own Concerts.
Our rehearsal is on a Thursday evening. It starts at 6pm with the trebles. They have the focus until 6.45pm, when the adults join us. At 7.30pm the trebles leave and the adults stay on until 8pm so that their parts can be given extra attention. We always welcome children from around 7 years, boys and girls. Come along to Church just before 6 to join in or just sit and listen to find out what it’s all about! Speak to Judith Reynolds (Choir Director) to find out more or she can be contacted by email through the Church Office. Being a chorister requires commitment but there are many rewards – it’s a great musical experience and you learn a lot. Trebles get paid for every practice and service they attend and there is payment for singing at Weddings as well!
But it's not all about singing...
We have at least two social events each year. One is a late summer garden tea party (with lawn games) and the other our Christmas Party with a mind-bending quiz. Both are hosted by Choir members.
Our Choir family forms an important part of Church life and we support and encourage each other in our music and our faith. Everyone looks forward to their Choir birthday card and a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday”. Contact Judith Reynolds to find out more.
