mothers'

union

Who Are we?

The Mothers' Union is an international Christian organization that seeks to support marriage and family life.

The Mothers' Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner in the village of Old Alresford in Hampshire, where her husband George Sumner was Rector, Mary Sumner was aware of a need for women to be empowered.

our membership

Today the membership exceeds four million and extends to eighty three countries. Not all of our members are mothers or even women, but the aims of supporting marriage and family life still continues through prayer, programmes, policy work and community relationships.

What we do...

Here in Ottery St Mary our local members meet for monthly meetings on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, where we cover a varied programme of speakers and events.

Our members support international and local causes through fundraising events, practical work and prayer.

We at Ottery St Mary have particularly close links with the Mothers' Union in Melanesia and Uganda. Following visits by members, we have a better understanding of their needs. Our aim is to continue building these relationships to the mutual benefit of both communities.
