We like to post great memories of events or gatherings that have happened at our church, or involving members of our worshiping community.

Jo and Darryn’s wedding Ottery St Mary 19/12/2020

After many stops and starts Jo and Darry married at St Mary’s just before Christmas 2020. Everything had been booked for a large military wedding a year previously.

Jo says, ‘Then in February we were beginning to hear about a virus in China, which might become a global issue. As time passed, we realised we'd have to make some major changes to our plans. First, we had to apply for a special license; and policies kept changing as to how many, if any, guests could attend, and it wasn't clear if Darryn’s parents from South Africa would be able to come. We got the go-ahead  only a few weeks before the revised date of 19th December. Despite the restrictions, we had the most wonderful day, with 15 family members and friends present. and the following things made our ceremony all the more special.

We carefully chose music and readings to make them as personal as possible. A friend sang during the signing of the register, and we had bell ringers and a small choir.

We set up a Zoom meeting and the ceremony was filmed from the pulpit. Over 80 people joined to watch, and they all said they felt a part of it.

We had a brilliant photographer and a videographer who captured the day perfectly.  Sharing the results with guests brought a bit of joy in "Lockdown 3".

We put extra flowers and candles in the church, and lit a wedding candle during the ceremony which was very special.

Some friends who were not allowed in the church waited in the churchyard, and joined in the confetti-throwing on the steps afterwards.

‘We quite honestly wouldn’t have changed a thing about our wedding; it is true what they say about it being the best day of your life. It was full of joy and love and we have the happiest memories.’
